The blue shield of Pope John Paul II appears in the centre of the design, to symbolise our allegiance to the ideals of His Holiness. The 'M' symbolises Mother Mary.
The eight pointed Maltese Cross symbolises our ancient chivalric and Hospitaller roots of the Order of Saint John, Knights of Malta. The Fleur-de-lis (French Lillies surrounding the blue shield) is a symbol of respect for our first Grand Master, The Blessed Gerard (French 1087-1120). The Grand Collar is a symbol of respect to our current Prince Grand Master. The white boat symbolises the Ecumenical character of our Order. The Cardinal's stick to the left and right hand sides of the outer red shield symbolise spiritual guidance. The outer red shield is a symbol of respect to our fallen Brother Knights. 'Ut Unum Sint' the Order's Motto - "That They Maybe One" is an abridged version of St. John's Gospel, 17:21, which is Christ's prayer for Christian unity. The Jewelled Crown symbolises Royal Protection. |
